National Conference on Peer Tutoring in Writing (NCPTW): Nov. 2013

My Writing Center Theory and Practice course from Fall 2012 (Auburn) opened the door to writing center scholarship. I used my research skills to construct a history of the Miller Writing Center and wrote a paper that used writing center scholarship to argue that it is important for faculty and tutors to know the history of their local writing center. I had the opportunity to present a version of this paper at the National Conference on Peer Tutoring in Writing (NCPTW) in November of 2013. In doing this work, I learned how the skills I honed in literature classes were applicable to different kinds of studies and discovered my interest in Rhetoric and Composition. More importantly, I realized that I have a strong interest in student writing and that I love being able to participate in conversations that directly and practically relate to teaching writers.

The conference took place in Tampa, FL.

Southeastern Writing Center Association (SWCA): Feb. 2014

Similarly, I developed my second conference presentation from a project I began while taking a second Writing Center Theory and Practice course. This course took place in Fall 2014 at the University of Louisville. One of my coworkers and I decided to research how we could use social media to explain various writing concepts to students. My coworker focused on considering audience and incorporating white space, as seen in Facebook albums, in projects. My project focused on using Twitter to understand citations and why we need to credit sources. We presented our research at the Southeastern Writing Center Association Conference in February of 2015. While attending the conference, I learned more about how spaces can affect tutoring sessions as well as how to use ePortfolios (like this one) as educational and professional development tools for tutors. By attending this conference, I was able to learn more about teaching writing and to continue participating in conversations about student writing.

I'm holding a handout from my presentation. There's a light dusting of snow and ice in the background.

This conference took place in Nashville, TN.
