Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) Academy

In order to become a better teacher, I applied for the University of Louisville's GTA Academy. As a participant, I attended monthly sessions that focused on key teaching strategies, such as ways to encourage active learning, develop a "teacherly" ethos, and handle in-class behavioral problems. The first semester culminated in a micro-teaching session, where I taught a group of fellow GTAs about using WordPress as a teaching tool. The other participants provided a helpful critique of my strategies so I could continue to grow as an instructor. In the second semester, all of the participants developed and wrote a teaching philosophy based on teaching experiences and the monthly meetings.

While in the GTA Academy, I learned a great deal about teaching by listening to GTAs from various disciplines. Each of us brings our own unique experiences and strategies, and I have been able to implement some of these strategies as I teach.
